Production methods are selected based on the productivity of the overall process and the Efficiency of machines. These two terms are sometimes considered synonymous in most companies, but they are not. It is essential to understand the difference between productivity and Efficiency to decide the method of production and type of systems to be used in industries for product manufacturing.


As per the efilecabinet, Efficiency is the amount of effort and resources people put into work, while productivity is all about the amount of work done in a specific time. Productivity is proactive, while Efficiency is reactive. Consider an example; you are working on the manufacturing of piston rings. Efficiency will be your ability to work with the machine provided using the particular process. The amount of piston rings manufactured in a certain period using a specific production method is productivity. Productivity is all about achieving the best output without considering the situation. Efficiency does not focus on production but the situation.

Now the question arrives, what is most important- productivity or efficiency? The answer to the question is simple- Productivity. Companies always look forward to producing more output in a given time. The system's efficiency can be increased for the given productivity value, but we cannot raise productivity for the given efficiency value. Therefore, most successful companies focus on increasing productivity, not Efficiency. Productivity helps companies do more, while Efficiency helps companies do the same with less.
