Job, Batch and Flow Production
Production is the process of creating goods and services. These goods are stored in warehouses before final shipment. It is essential to utilize the efficient production method to reduce error and complexity by increasing productivity. There are three main types of production to choose from- Job production, Batch production, and flow (mass) production. Plant managers have to decide the best kind of production to choose from for a particular product.
Job Production: It is a type of production where individual items are detailed. Each item is made individually, and the work on the next is done after finishing the previous one. Example of job production includes designer dresses, building ships, bridges, buildings, etc.
Batch Production: It is a
type of production where items are made in batches. A group of similar products
is worked together before starting a new set. Example includes Computer chips,
electrical goods, jet engine, etc.
Flow (mass) Production: It is a
type of production where identical components are manufactured together before
the arrival of the next batch of products. An example may include automobile
components, wherein individual members are manufactured using flow production
in the case of mass manufacturing.
An important question arrives, how to
choose a particular type of production for your specific product. Sometimes,
the choice is easy, but sometimes it isn't easy. The best method is to consider
the type of product being made and the size of the market served. Small firms
for a limited market segment mainly use job production to cater to each
customer's demand. Batch production is used to meet the group's needs, for
example making 500 sizes 38 pants. Flow production is used for mass
manufacturing, where the market segment and the customer base are very high.
For instance, an automobile is manufactured in large quantities using the flow
production method.
